“Fishermen looked out to towards the sea, ignoring the land at their backs, and a stranger was someone from the next village.”
Threads – The Delicate Life of John Craske. Julia Blackburn.
From the Olive and George collection, drawing inspiration from the Norfolk fishermen’s Gansey jumpers of the 19th and early 20th centuries, Goffin is a neat fitting menswear jumper.
This style borrows its name from George Larner “Cazey” Goffin, a grocer and knitter from Winterton who was related to two fishing families; the Larners and the Goffins.
The younger fishermen worked on the trawlers which sailed further afield, sometimes as far as Yorkshire but regularly to Grimsby, whilst the older fishermen liked to stay closer to home, often casting the nets or crabbing pots off their little boats within sight of their homes.
Knitted from fully traceable 100% British worsted wool which has been spun in Yorkshire and lovingly knitted in Perugia, Italy.
This menswear style has neat proportions, measuring 64 cm in length and 54cm in width across the chest for a size S/M and 66cm long by 57cm wide for a size M/L.
It features a fisherman’s rib detail along the raglan shoulder seams which continue along the underarm and side seams, finishing with a neat rib at the cuffs and neck trim to keep out the cold.
