⚓️ Anchors… 💙 I had so much fun research ⚓️ Anchors… 💙 I had so much fun researching the WINTERTON group of knits! I found this anchor design on a vintage Gansey knitted by Cazey Goffin from Winterton Norfolk. It was part of quite a complicated design from a Cornish Bridal Pattern. Who knows how it found its way up to Norfolk..? Anchors are a very cliched part of nautical fashion but but I love the sailor connotations that hark back to the 1920s and bathing chic on the Cote d’Azure 🏖️ My versions are extremely soft, due to the merino and OEKO-TEX cotton blend I chose. This is me in action over the weekend at @primrosehilldesignersale thank you so much Nancy @pru.design for taking the photo. ⚓️ For everyone who doesn’t know my story, I’m Frankie and I founded Charl Knitwear in 2020 after 20+ years designing knitwear for top fashion brands like Burberry and Benetton. I wanted to create jumpers with a real story or “soul” behind them, not just “another knit”. 🌊 I come from Norfolk and have always been fascinated by the Norfolk fishing communities’ Gansey jumpers. I felt that everyone knows about the fishermen’s jumpers from other parts of the country but not those from Norfolk. 🐑 I wanted to breathe new life into them by re-working the stitches and shapes in order to make them relevant for today, whilst staying true to the originals and knitting them in British wools wherever possible.( Although I’ve chosen much softer ones!) 🐟 Each piece is named after a real fisherman, knitter or fishing village and incorporates stitches from the original Gansey patterns. 🇬🇧 🇮🇹 I make most of the collection here in the UK and a small part is produced in Italy by a family run knitting factory in Perugia. It is really important to me to simplify the supply chain and really understand every part of the process, that way I can be sure of the provenance of the fibres and feel comfortable that everyone is being paid fairly for their part. 🪡 This summer I’m very excited to be adding some woven pieces to the collection: a dress and blouse that have proudly been made in Norfolk by a factory that made the original mariners clothing over 100 years ago. #charlknits #mystory #meetthefounder
