Royal National Lifeboat Institution

⛵Instead of celebrating Black Friday, at Charl Knitwear we've decided to donate 10% of our sales from Friday 27th November, through to midnight on Sunday 29th November to the RNLI who continue to save the lives of so many people at sea.

Still so vital today as it was 100 years ago.

The RNLI is written into the DNA of the Norfolk Gansey jumpers, many of the Norfolk fishermen whose jumpers inspired this collection were also Lifeboat men. In particular Henry Blogg, who was the most decorated lifeboatman in the RNLI history. He served for 53 years on Cromer's lifeboats and with the help of his courageous crew, he saved 873 lives before retiring on 1947.

Unbelievably, at the turn of the 20th century most fishermen and lifeboat men couldn't swim and this account from fisherman, Mr Farrow brings to life the terrible fear of being caught in a storm at sea:

"came on that afternoon and it cam on to snow and it Blue a heavy Gale and we could not see the lngth of the ship it was night it was terrible rugh youy could here the see roaring in the darkness."

It's #hatweek here at Charl so we'd like to share a bit about our Wool and the journey it goes on to become one of our lovely Cooper hats...

🐑 When I started my journey with Charl, I wanted to make that process as transparent as possible; to my customers, so that they could see where the wool really comes from, where it’s spun and where it is knitted, but also to ensure that my product is made from sustainable, natural fibres and harms no animals, people or the environment in the process.

In my experience, the more processes a garment goes through, the harder it is to trace, and therein lies the problem; if you don’t know where it has been then it’s not traceable and nasty little surprises can creep in.

🇬🇧 I chose British wool because it is certified British (which means the farmers have to comply with very strict UK animal welfare conditions), the journey from fleece to finished wool is completely traceable and, in the case of my yarn, it comes from sheep that are raised no further than 50 miles from the mill where the wool is spun. Not to mention the immense heritage this fibre is imbued with!

🐏 The Cooper hat is knitted from 100% #British wool - as are the Hardingham and Charlie scarves that it can be worn with. It's a unisex one size fits all style with stitches reminiscent of the old Norfolk fishermen's beanie hats and jumpers that inspire my whole collection.

Time for tea...

🇮🇹 I used to live in Italy where i went to great lengths to get hold of a decent cup of tea - you just can't fing one out there!

☕The Italians are experts at a quick espresso stood "al banco", finished in 2 sips then you're on your way!

🌅 But at this time of year and about this time of day; 3.30ish when the light is waning but you've still got to keep going until dinner time, I think you really need a little pick me up; for me that's a cup of tea and a slice of cake, just sipped, not rushed!

🐑 Especially relevant as one of the features was about rare breed British wool such as the @risbyflock in Lincolnshire and the importance of supporting our British farmers by buying @britishwool, a highly sustainable and traceable fibre with a low carbon footprint!

🐟 Threads- The Delicate Life of John Craske by Julia Blackburn traces the life and work of this little-known Norfolk fisherman turned embroidery artist from the first half of the 20th century. A totally engrossing read!

🐟 Herring Tales by Donald S. Murray traces the history of the herring which was the life source of many fishermen around the coast of the British Isles, but which has since disappeared from our seas.

⛵ Crossing the Bar, Tales of Wells Harbour by the Harbour Master Robert Smith MBE is an account of the comings and goings at the harbour of this famous North Norfolk fishing village. Thanks to @charlies_norfolk_food_heroes

Colours of the day; Cream, Russet and Navy...

It seems to me that natural fibres look different depending on the time of day and season, they appear to absorb or reflect the light differently.
These shades certainly looked more saturated back in early autumn. Now they appear gently subdued, just like the light outside my window.

🚀I've just had a new delivery of Codlings, Hardinghams and Charlies from my London factory! They look beautiful in the late afternoon light. I chose a new, slightly paler shade of grey for Codling this time (to be uploaded onto my website later this evening!) and it looks really lovely with its natural corozo buttons.

🌎 Both the natural, undyed baby alpaca yarn and the corozo buttons come from South America, somewhere I've always wanted to go...

Many of the fishermen also worked on the lifeboats. In stormy weather the life boat went out a lot.

This evocative picture was taken by Olive Edis at the beginning of the last century, but the details are so clear that it could've been taken yesterday...
