Betty in Shetland wool

They began in Blakeney; where the fishermen had to wait for the tide to carry them along the meanderings of the estuary before they could get into open waters“.

From the Olive and George collection, drawing inspiration from the Norfolk Fishermen’s Gansey jumpers of the 19th and early 20th centuries, Betty in Shetland wool is a spring-weight, crew neck knitted jacket with roomy proportions, an original “hailstone” stitch on the top half of the body and cosy oversized bucket pockets.

Made from 100% authentic Shetland wool and knitted in Nottinghamshire.

Betty in Shetland wool is available in three sizes: XS/S, S/M and M/L and comes in the Sky Blue colour only. It is trimmed with sustainable toffee coloured “Codelite” buttons.

Betty Martin was a Gansey knitter from Sheringham, Norfolk who knitted many of the fishermen’s Gansey jumpers. Her signature stitches were “chevrons” and “meshes” or fishing nets.

This generous, spring-weight knitted jacket comes in three sizes: XS/S fits women’s size 8-10, S/M fits women’s size 10-12  and M/L fits women’s size 12/14 or men’s size S/M. The roomy proportions with straight hem mean this style can be effortlessly pulled on over T-shirts or blouses as a softer and cosier alternative to a denim jacket. The authentic Shetland wool is lighter and dryer in feel (than the British wool which has been used in the classic Betty cardigan), making this piece just right for spring.

The vibrant Sky Blue colour is a beautiful heathered tone which is unique to this yarn, you can find out more about this precious yarn in my journal entry on Shetland wool.

Trimmed with a chunky ribbed placket and neck trim. The toffee coloured buttons are made in England from a sustainable by-product of milk called “Codelite”.

Model wears size S/M and is a size 10-12 (UK) and is 5″75  tall.
