“They began in Blakeney; where the fishermen had to wait for the tide to carry them along the meanderings of the estuary before they could get into open waters“.

Inspired by the Norfolk Fishermen’s Gansey jumpers of the 19th and early 20th centuries, the Betty in Shetland wool is a chunky knitted crew neck cardigan/ jacket. It features an original “hailstone” stitch on the top half of the body and cosy oversized bucket pockets.
Made from 100% authentic Shetland wool and knitted in Nottinghamshire (Britain).
Betty Martin was a Gansey knitter from Sheringham, Norfolk who knitted many of the fishermen’s Gansey jumpers. Her signature stitches were “chevrons” and “meshes” or fishing nets.
Description
This generous, knitted jacket comes in three sizes: XS/S fits women’s size 8-10, S/M fits women’s size 10-12 and M/L fits women’s size 14/16. The roomy proportions and straight hem mean this style can be effortlessly pulled on over T-shirts, blouses or lighter knits as a softer and cosier alternative to a denim jacket. The authentic Shetland wool is lighter and dryer in feel (than the British wool which has been used in the classic Betty cardigan), making this piece just right for autumn layering.
Trimmed with a chunky ribbed placket and neck trim. The toffee coloured buttons are made in England from a sustainable by-product of milk called “Codelite”.
The vibrant Sky Blue and Blood Orange colours are beautiful heathered tones unique to this yarn. Find out more about my Authentic Shetland Wool here: Authentic. Shetland. Wool.

The style was everything I’d hoped it would be, oversized and straight-fitting (XS/S for my size 8-10). The sky blue colour exceeded expectations, a subtle mix of blue with a hint of green and a lovely soft robustness to the yarn. The knit is so easy and comforting to wear, simply beautiful, thank you!
