Mellis

“I tried to imagine that mass of life as it once had been, hundreds of thousands of herring moving in shimmering unison, like starlings in the sky. The light of the moon drawing them closer to the water’s surface, the light glancing on their bodies so that it looked as if the sea was burning with white flames.”

From the Olive and George collection, drawing inspiration from the Norfolk fishermen’s Gansey jumpers and also from the art of Margaret Mellis, Mellis is a unisex cardigan which comes striped or in solid shades of blue and is knitted in a traditional fishermen’s rib.
Margaret Mellis was a collage artist from the 20th century who began her career with the St Ives set in Cornwall but who later came to live in Southwold where she created art from driftwood and other found objects washed up on the Suffolk coast. This cardigan is directly inspired by the bright and joyful colours found in her work – in particular by her “Blue Lighthouse.” Painting of 1952-54.
This cardigan is tightly knitted in a chunky 100% organic cotton yarn which holds its shape to create a wonderfully voluminous silhouette, especially when the sleeves are scrunched up and the front body is buttoned to create a blouson effect.
As always in my designs, there is a nod to the Norfolk fishermen’s Gansey knits in the “herringbone” motif which continues above the ribbed hem and cuffs. Herring were the main catch on the Norfolk coast during the first half of the 20th century before they mysteriously relocated to different waters just before the outbreak of the Second World War.
Description
The Mellis cardigan is knitted from GOTS certified 100% organic Peruvian Pima cotton – one of the finest cottons in the world. (For more information on this yarn please read my Journal entry on organic cotton or the 100% cotton section of the “Sustainability” page.) This garment uses a chunky version of this yarn so that it is the ideal weight and softness for all seasons and is knitted in my lovely knitting factory in Perugia, Italy.
This style is generous in size to cover the bottom and hips and to make you feel cocooned, ideal for pulling over your shoulders on a breezy coastal walk or button up on a cooler summer day. I have deliberately made the sleeves wider than on the Codling so that you can easily fit an oversized sleeve and this creates a fabulous shape when the sleeves are scrunched up.
Trimmed with natural corozo buttons, (or sustainable milk protein “Codelite” buttons on the Cromer Orange colour) the size extra small/small (UK size 8-10) measures approximately 65cm long by 54cm wide, the size small/medium (UK size 10-12) measures approximately 67 long by 57cm wide and the size medium/large (UK size 12-14) measures 69cm long by 60cm wide. This style is unisex with the 2 larger sizes corresponding to menswear size S and M.
To discover more about the cotton in my collection please see the “Sustainability” page or ready my Journal entry on 100% cotton.
