They began in Blakeney; where the fishermen had to wait for the tide to carry them along the meanderings of the estuary before they could get into open waters“.

Part of the “Make Do and Mend” Autumn ’24 collection, the Betty in Patchwork is inspired by the Norfolk Fishermen’s Gansey jumpers and the resourcefulness of the knitters who mended the jumpers when they became worn, by re-knitting these areas in whatever yarn they had left over, in a slightly different colour. This is a chunky knit crew neck cardigan with roomy proportions, an original “hailstone” stitch on the top half of the body with with the pockets, neck trim and button placket in contrasting colours.

Made from super soft 100% British wool and knitted in Nottinghamshire (Great Britain).

Betty Martin was a Gansey knitter from Sheringham, Norfolk who knitted many of the fishermen’s Gansey jumpers. Her signature stitches were “chevrons” and “meshes” or fishing nets.

“From fleece to finished knit in less than 125 miles.”
